About Zen Yoga Wellness…

Zen Yoga Wellness is an award-winning Yoga program that specialises in providing gentle, adapted Therapeutic Yoga programs, that are designed for each individual, and delivered as either private 1:1 sessions, or small functional group classes, as well as at some selected public class venues. The emphasis of the Yoga – based in the principal of Viniyoga (that which is appropriate for the student) – is always about the individual, and is grounded in the ancient Yoga modality of Cikitsa (healing, therapy). It combines the Therapeutic Yoga of the Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya lineage of south India (in the Patanjali tradition), with gentle healing Tibetan and Zen Yoga traditions.

Zen Yoga Wellness is a rejuvenating and restorative blend of Breath (Pranayama), Postures (Asana), and gentle flow movement, with Mindfulness Meditation (Bhavana). We work at a micro-level of functional Mind/Body Concentration – functional movement with functional breath, bringing our focused attention to every choice. It is particularly useful for restoring energy (prana) depletion and for those suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Myofascial Pain and other Auto-Immune Diseases, as well as strengthening bones, and muscles and bringing alignment to the skeletal structure of the body, and can be helpful in reducing stress-related tension in the body and the mind. It is also a wonderful overall practice for promoting increased physical flexibility, range-of-motion (ROM), and a sense of everyday health, wellness, and happiness – Yoga for Life!!

Sri Shanthi Bhavana is an internationally Certified Yoga Teacher, Yoga educator, and Therapist (IICT) – creator of healing therapy music and self-help audio programs for Yoga and Meditation, and a certified Massage Therapist.

Zen Yoga Wellness is appropriate for any adult-aged person and particularly benefits older persons and those suffering or recovering from injuries, illness and medical conditions. It is a useful rehabilitation program for those seeking healing, recovery and renewal. Zen Yoga's popular award-winning Therapeutic "Ageless Yoga" Program uses chairs as props and is appropriate for older students.

Medical Practitioners, including GP’s, Specialists, Chiropractors, Physiotherapists, and Psychologists recommend this form of Yoga, and Zen Yoga Wellness often receives client referrals from these medical professionals.

This Yoga program is a celebration of the natural environment - the ancient mountains, the river, the immense sky, the ever-changing light and mood of the mountains (sun, mist, fog), and our union with nature. Yoga designed in the Classical Tradition of Patanjali, as taught by Sri T. Krishnamacharya, the “Modern Father of Yoga” – the teacher of Shanthi’s teachers.

Zen Approach – Combining classical Indian Hatha, Vedic and Tibetan Yoga, with Zen and Dhamma philosophy of the Buddha, and gentle mindful breath-centred movement inspired by Chinese Taoist Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Kung Fu, Sri Shanthi Bhavana designs Yoga wellness programs to suit the individual.  His classes are small and intimate so that each person receives the attention they need to develop a personal Yoga practice with the intention of cultivating self-awareness and self-management of their own health and wellness.

“Zen” philosophy is an approach to life in which every single thing is done with full mindfulness – residing in the present moment. Yoga is the act of unifying one’s mind, physical body and energy body in balance (Sattva), and connecting this with universal spiritual energy (life-force, vital energy / Prana or Qi). “Zen” means, “being present”.

Zen philosophy developed around 2,600 years ago, as a method to bring calmness to the mind, and thus solve the problem of human suffering. The meditating “Rishis” (sages or seers) of northern India sought the same answers over 3,000 years ago, as did Lord Buddha Shakyamuni, over 2,500 years ago… “What is the meaning of life… what is the cause of suffering, and how can it can alleviated?” The union of Yoga brings harmony to the physical and energy body, creating a sense of balance that promotes good health, and relief from suffering. The practice of Yoga dates back to between 5,000 and 25,000 years, the “Classical Yoga” tradition of Patanjali, as taught by Sri T. Krishnamacharya, dates back 2,000 years, and the Dharma teachings of the Buddha, over 2,500 years. These are wonderfully rich and ancient living knowledge systems, as useful today as they have been for millennia. Our “Zen Hatha Yoga Programs” are inspired by, and celebrate, these health and self-wellness management systems, that we call, “Ancient Healing Therapies for Modern Times!”

“Zen Yoga” incorporates asanas (physical postures and movement) to first restore, then strengthen, and ultimately expand a person’s physical anatomy – “a flexible body cultivates a flexible mind”. Zen Yoga is all about using the lessons of “Zen” to quiet the mind, balancing optimal circulation of energy around the physical body’s space, producing mental clarity and a pathway to higher consciousness (a higher self).

Zen encourages one to step back and view a wider perspective and to explore their true nature – the bigger Self.

About Your Teacher - Zen Yogi Sri Shanthi Bhavana

Sri Shanthi Bhavana is a certified international Yoga Teacher, specialist in Adapted Therapeutic Yoga for healing and rehabilitation; creator of specialist music and sound programs for "Optimal State of Living Yoga Therapy Teacher Training Program" (California).

Sri Shanthi Bhavana works with older populations as well as younger adults and those seeking relief from injuries, physical limitations and medical conditions (working towards restoring physical, mental and spiritual imbalance), and this yoga is especially beneficial to sufferers of Chronic Lower Back Pain, Arthritis, stiff-joints, and body mis-alignment, as well as depression, anxiety and stress. Much of Sri Shanthi Bhavana’s work is aimed at helping people manage stress – physical, mental and emotional.

Sri Shanthi Bhavana is also a musician, music composer, international recording artist, and music sound therapy producer – a graduate of Griffith University and the Queensland Conservatorium of Music (Graduate Diploma in Film Music Composition). He creates his own range of music and sound therapy programs that he uses in all his Yoga and Meditation sessions. He works with creating specific sound frequencies that resonate with the subtle energy system (Chakras) of the body. This is engaged through toning and chanting, or just entraining the brain with specific healing frequencies that correspond with those which are out-of-balance in the body. In this way, using the principles of Samkhya (ancient Indian spiritual healing philosophy), he works to gradually bring subtle anatomy into balance – from the imbalanced, dis-ease states of Rajasic and Tamasic, to Sattvic (Sattva = purity, balance, wellness)

Sri Shanthi Bhavana’s music and sound therapy programs are available for download through more than 50 online distributors, including majors iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, Spotify and eMusic, and are used by leading Yoga teachers and students, as well as healing spas, resorts and wellness centres world-wide. His programs are also used as music and sound therapy audio content for the “Optimal State of Living 865” Yoga Therapy Teacher Training program in California – one of the most prestigious Yoga Therapy training programs in the world – associated with the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT).

Sri Shanthi Bhavana is based in Australia, but works internationally and is developing “Zen Yoga” retreats. He runs small group classes and personalised “one-on-one” private therapeutic yoga sessions, as well as specialist workshops and retreats.

Sri Shanthi Bhavana’s award-winning, Therapeutic and Restorative Yoga is recommended by medical doctors and specialists, psychologists, physiotherapists and chiropractors.
