Sri Shanthi Bhavana is a holistic therapist specialising in Adaptive Therapeutic Yoga – Hatha, ViniYoga and Restorative Yoga – including Meditation, Chanting and Sound Therapy Meditation (Nada Yoga), delivered as Therapeutic Healing Yoga.

These practices are based in the tradition of legendary Yoga masters          Sri T. Krishnamacharya, Sri T.K.V. Desikachar, and Sri B.K.S. Iyengar, as taught by Shanthi’s teachers and mentors, world-renown Yoga Teachers and Yoga Therapists, Dr. Larry Payne and Dr. Amy Wheeler in California, USA.

He specialises in teaching Hatha and Restorative Yoga, and adapted Yoga techniques such as Chair Yoga (suitable for people with disabilities or flexibility/mobility challenges), or people suffering from pain, or recovering from injuries or surgery (rehab) - as well as relaxation techniques and meditation and sound healing.

Sri Shanthi Bhavana’s first Yoga teacher is world-renown, LA-based Larry Payne, Ph.D., who remains a good friend and mentor. It was Larry Payne who first introduced Shanthi to the Krishnamacharya tradition of Therapeutic Yoga.

Sri Shanthi Bhavana is a registered professional therapist with the International Institute for Complementary Therapists (IICT). He is a registered practitioner, graduate and Certified Therapeutic Yoga Teacher, Hatha Yoga Teacher, and Restorative Yoga Teacher with AURA Wellness Centre, Massachusetts, USA, and Chair Yoga and Meditation Teacher, with Inner Voyage Holistic Human Development (IVHHD) School of Meditation and Alternative Therapy. He is also a full member of the International Meditation Teachers Association (IMTA), and the Sound Healers Association / International Sound Therapy (SHA / IST).

Sri Shanthi Bhavana is also a Certified Massage Therapist, from Discover Massage Australia, and registered with IICT. He integrates Massage Therapy into the holistic approach of Therapeutic Yoga, as a complementary practice.

Sri Shanthi teaches yoga in the tradition of Classical Yoga’s Sri Bhagavan Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, Sri T. Krishnamacharya, Sri T.K.V. Desikachar and B.K.S. Iyengar, and meditation in the yogic and Buddhist traditions.

He has studied yoga and meditation in India, Sri Lanka, Australia and the US. His practice is based around the Classical Hatha Yoga tradition of Sri T. Krishnamacharya and Sri Bhagavan Patanjali, with Nada sound techniques  added for helping with Pranayama breathing and meditation. He also practices Vipassana (“Insight”) and mindfulness meditation and is a student and devoted practitioner of the Theravadan and Zen Buddhist traditions.

Sri Shanthi Bhavana studied Classical Hatha Yoga, Yoga Methodologies & Ethics, and Chants of India through the University of New Mexico Yoga Program in the US. He undertook yoga studies with the Yoga Institute in Sydney, Australia, and also studied Music Composition at Griffith University and the Conservatorium of Music, Queensland, graduating with a Post Graduate degree in Film Music composition (specializing in music for relaxation and meditation).

Sri Shanthi uses traditional Hatha Yoga as the basis for teaching Chair Yoga.

I am very sensitive to those who are not very flexible and others who are just starting out in yoga, or are in rehab recovering from injury and need a practice designed specifically for them - especially those who have difficulty in getting down onto the floor. This is where Chair Flow Yoga is so beneficial. I am certainly a student and teacher of the ancient yoga philosophy that states: "Yoga is for every-body… no matter how flexible or inflexible… it is not a 'one-size-fits-all' philosophy"… it is an individual practice and should be taught as such. The teaching-lineage and tradition I follow is a breath-centred and breath-rhythm/movement practice, that has its heart in mindfulness. It is a gentle, flowing, dynamic form of classical yoga, connected to correct yogic breathing and breathing techniques to control Prana (vital energy), or Pranayama practice.

As legendary yoga teacher Sri T. Krishnamacharya taught: "Breath is central to Yoga because it is central to life... and yoga is about Life".

People often ask if I teach beginners...

Yes, and no.  I do not have "Beginner's Classes" as such, because I don’t like that ‘label'. In my view, there are no ‘beginners' because, I believe, we are all beginners in the sense that, in Yoga we never stop learning (it's a lifetime learning process), and our bodies never stop changing, evolving all the time. I believe it is the role of the teacher to identify what the student needs to meet them where they are, and provide an appropriate practice for each individual, and continue to monitor their progress and adapt and modify the practice as they evolve.

We have to constantly be aware of our body and mind, and change our attitude and our practice to suit where we are at on our life journey.

Giving a student what is appropriate to them personally, according to their experience, health, level of fitness, natural ability, etc., is based on what Krishnamacharya taught: "Teach what is appropriate to the student.

By integrating the ancient teachings of Yoga and Indian philosophy with modern-day requirements, Krishnamacharya created yoga practices that are as accurate and powerful as they are practical and relevant.                           Using Vini Yoga as a concept (Vi = special + ni = appropriate), he taught that:

"Vini yoga is teaching what is appropriate to a student’s needs. This is a fundamental principle of yoga teaching – and is the basis of the teaching style of Classical yoga".

Vini yoga works with “sequential process” or Viniyasa Krama – the emphasis is on practicing a posture according to one’s individual needs and capability – with regulated breath carefully coordinated with the postural movements.

Sri Shanthi Bhavana is also a sound healing music artist (Nada Yoga), dedicated to creating specially-designed music soundscapes to help resonate with, and stimulate the subtle energy centres of the mind and body. He draws from the inspirational philosophies of Yoga, Ayurveda, Dhamma, and nature to create music that brings peace and tranquillity to the listener and yoga practitioner. Using various world instruments to produce resonant tonal frequencies and sparse cycling melodies, Sri Shanthi Bhavana's music is designed to help listeners find peace within themselves and oneness with the universe, by stimulating the mind toward higher states of conscious mindfulness, through concentration.

Sri Shanthi’s sound healing work and the production of healing soundscapes for relaxation, meditation, sleep therapy and spoken word guided visualisations (meditations) is used worldwide by students, practitioners and world-renowned yoga teachers and is available online through more than 50 digital distribution sources, such as: iTunes, Amazon, CD Baby, Spotify, etc. (Search for: Shantha Sri, Peter Morley, Energi Music).

He produces specialty soundscapes for yoga, meditation, spiritual focusing, relaxation, spa and natural therapies, massage, and sleep therapy, as well as self-help guided visualization programs with healing collaborator, California-based integrative clinical psychologist, Dr Juliet Rohde-Brown.

Through his music soundscapes, Sri Shanthi Bhavana continues to study the emotional effects of music and sound on the psyche and in particular their applications in assisting with achieving states of higher consciousness.

What’s in a Name?… Sri Shanthi Bhavana - a spiritual yogi

In the time-honoured Buddhist Dhamma tradition dating back more than 2,500 years to the Buddha, and beyond thousands of years to ancient Dhamma sages, the name Sri Shanthi Bhavana was carefully chosen to reflect his personality and in particular, his spiritual path and work, and given to him by his friend, meditation mentor and spiritual guide Venerable G. Seevalie, Thero – Chief Incumbent Monk of the Sri Wardanaramaya Buddhist Monastery and Temple, in Dankotuwa, northern Sri Lanka.

Translated from the ancient Pali and Sanskrit languages it means:

Sri = Holy

Shanthi = Peace, Calm, Tranquility and Transcendence

Bhavana = cultivating (meditating) - translates from Sanskrit as, 'positive attitude' / cultivating  visualization or meditation. (One of the three qualities interpreted from Sanskrit relating to one's readiness for meditation)

This meaning then becomes the spiritual basis and the integral core for Shanthi’s Zen Yoga Wellness programs: Creating BhavanaCultivating / imagining (or Visualising/Meditating upon) Peace, Calmness, Tranquility and Transcendence, in one’s life, and daily Yoga practice.
